The Importance of Law Firm Training

The primary function of a law firm is first to advise potential clients about their individual legal rights and obligations, then to commence the process of actually practicing law. Because of the nature of the jobs and the vast number of different practice areas in which attorneys may choose to practice, there are several steps that prospective candidates must take to make sure they receive consideration for employment.

The first step is to apply for an interview at any of the many regional or nationwide firms that hire new professionals. Many of these firms will conduct initial interviews over the phone or by fax, but will also evaluate the applicant's qualifications for a personal visit. Once hired, candidates will usually need to begin to develop a network of local contacts within the firm or in other legal issue areas. Some of the best ways to build a strong networking list includes attending local functions where other attorneys practice, volunteering at local charities, attending dinners or luncheons hosted by local chambers of commerce, and networking with members of other law firms. While these initial steps may not seem like the most exciting or enjoyable parts of working at a law firm, they are important steps in building a network of local support that can be crucial in a law firm's future success. The more local support a lawyer has, the more likely he or she will be able to make connections with other local law firms when it comes time to move to another location. Once hired, it is important for lawyers who take on additional work at a law firm to understand how much responsibility they have for the success of their colleagues. Because partners have different skill sets, finding a partner that has the skills necessary to successfully manage the various tasks required at a law firm can prove challenging. The key, of course, is to build a strong working relationship with other partners in the firm so that both are confident in the skills of their colleagues. There is much time involved in working at a law firm.
